Austin declares September Ukrainian Heritage Month
Mayor Kirk Watson and the City of Austin presented an official proclamation recognizing September as Ukrainian Heritage Month. The proclamation honors the vibrant culture, rich history, and enduring spirit of our community — from our language, music, and art to the volunteerism and unity that make Austin home. It specifically highlights the collective impact of local organizations including ATXUkrainians, the Ukrainian School of Austin, Liberty Ukraine Foundation, and UNWLA Branch 147, which together have mobilized over $20 million in aid and support. For our team at ATXUkrainians and the Ukrainian School of Austin, this proclamation is deeply meaningful. What started in 2016 as a small weekly language class at a local library has grown into a thriving community sanctuary serving over 140 children and their families. It is a living reminder to our children that their heritage, story, and identity are seen and celebrated by the city they call home. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Council Member Krista Laine, Katie Kizer, Mayor Kirk Watson, and the entire City of Austin. Most importantly, thank you to our local Austin-American neighbors, volunteers, teachers, and partners who have stood by our side year after year. We are proud of our Ukrainian roots, and we are so proud to call Austin home. 💙💛
